Certificate PG-13 98 min   -   Comedy | Fantasy | Horror
Metascore: 48/100 (17 reviews)
A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up accidentally summoning a Christmas demon to his family home.
Director: Michael Dougherty
Stars: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman

The Buzz: Chances are Trick 'r Treat director Michael Dougherty has another cult hit on his hands at the very least with this holiday horror story, which is only rated PG-13, sadly. Of course that might mean a more explicit version is waiting in the DVD/Blu-ray wings?

2. Chi-Raq (2015)

Chi-Raq (2015)
Certificate R 118 min   -   Drama
Metascore: 78/100 (29 reviews)
A modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes, set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago.
Director: Spike Lee
Stars: Nick Cannon, Teyonah Parris, Wesley Snipes, Angela Bassett

The Buzz: Spike Lee's latest serves to open up a greater dialogue about issues that the current national media typically passes over. The film's themes hit especially hard for star Jennifer Hudson, who lost three family members to gun violence in 2008. Chi-Raq also marks the return of the great Dave Chappelle, albeit in a small, but notable role. - Chako Suzuki

3. The Letters (2014)

The Letters (2014)
Certificate PG 114 min   -   Drama
Metascore: 25/100 (11 reviews)
A drama that explores the life of Mother Teresa through letters she wrote to her longtime friend and spiritual advisor, Father Celeste van Exem over a nearly 50-year period.
Director: William Riead
Stars: Juliet Stevenson, Rutger Hauer, Max von Sydow, Priya Darshini

The Buzz: Looks like a finely tuned release is in store for this hagiography that seems to be a campaign for Mother Teresa posthumous canonization as it steers clear of all of the controversial aspects of her life and work.

4. Macbeth (2015)

Certificate R 113 min   -   Drama | War
Metascore: 71/100 (27 reviews)
Macbeth, a Thane of Scotland, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.
Director: Justin Kurzel
Stars: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jack Madigan, Frank Madigan

The Buzz: We hear this film's style threatens to overwhelm its substance at any and every moment, and that's one of many reasons we've been driven mad with anticipation for Justin Kurzel's follow-up to Snowtown.

5. Youth (2015)

Youth (2015)
Certificate R 118 min   -   Drama
Metascore: 62/100 (26 reviews)
A retired orchestra conductor is on holiday with his daughter and his film director best friend in the Alps when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip's birthday.
Director: Paolo Sorrentino
Stars: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Jane Fonda

The Buzz: Here's a charming buddy movie, framed around two seventysomethings and filmed in the lush Swiss Alps, that takes a wistful spin at career, friendship, family, legacy, and growing old. Michael Caine stars as a retired composer summoned to perform for the Queen, and Harvey Keitel plays his best friend, a film director attempting to put the finishing touches on a screenplay for what will be his last great film. This opus, which has already been well-received in Europe, is the second English-language movie for award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino. - Bret Federigan

6. A Royal Night Out (2015)

A Royal Night Out (2015)
Certificate PG-13 97 min   -   Drama | Romance

Director: Julian Jarrold
Stars: Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Emily Watson, Rupert Everett

The Buzz: Underrated director Julian Jarrold has assembled one of the more appealing casts of the year for what seems to be a feather-light but imminently watchable slice of royal-girl fantasy. congratulations to star Bel Powley for her breakout year with The Diary of a Teenage Girl, a performance for which she just won a Gotham Award.

7. The World of Kanako (2014)

The World of Kanako (2014)
118 min   -   Crime | Drama | Horror | Mystery

As former detective Akikazu searches for his missing daughter, Kanako, he soon learns she has a mysterious secret life.
Director: Tetsuya Nakashima
Stars: Kôji Yakusho, Nana Komatsu, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Hiroya Shimizu
Add to Watchlist

The Buzz: Apparently Tetsuya Nakashima's take on Akio Fukamachi's novel is a brutal endurance test anchored by Koji Yakusho's performance as a broken former police detective who returns to action after a triple murder and the disappearance of his estranged daughter. In fact, we understand Yakusho's character is the only thing that keeps the viewer from falling into an abyss. In other words: Kanako has been up to some particularly nasty business.

8. Life (2015)

Director: Anton Corbijn
Stars: Robert Pattinson, Dane DeHaan, Peter Lucas, Lauren Gallagher

The Buzz: This biographical drama chronicles the story behind the 1955 LIFE magazine photo shoot by Dennis Stock of then-rising star, James Dean. This flick gives us an inside look at some of Hollywood's most iconic images and into the life of a gifted, yet troubled-actor's life. directed by Anton Corbijn, it follows the friendship between Dean, who is played by Dane DeHaan and Stock who is portrayed by Robert Pattinson. For Pattinson, this might just be the flick that will finally make everyone forget about Twilight (even though it will always have a special place in my heart)! - Shara Angell

9. Hitchcock/Truffaut (2015)

Hitchcock Truffaut (2015)
Certificate PG-13 79 min   -   Documentary

Director: Kent Jones
Stars: Mathieu Amalric, Wes Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, David Fincher

The Buzz: A Letter to Elia documentarian Kent Jones deepens his focus on great directors with his latest project, which played well at Cannes and other fests.

10. Christmas Eve (2015)

Christmas Eve (2015)
Certificate PG 95 min   -   Comedy
Hilarity, romance, and transcendence prevail after a power outage traps six different groups of New Yorkers inside elevators on Christmas Eve.
Director: Mitch Davis
Stars: Patrick Stewart, Jon Heder, James Roday, Cheryl Hines

The Buzz: Holiday-themed movies haven't caught on with audiences yet this season, so we're unsure how this ensemble comedy will perform, though it seems to be made for Faith audiences but marketed as a movie for one and all. No matter the subject matter, we love that Patrick Stewart has been spending time on the big and small screens this year, though.

11. MI-5 (2015)

MI-5 (2015)
Certificate R 104 min   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

Jennifer Ehle also has a lead role in the film, though you wouldn't know that from the marketing.

12. In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
Certificate PG-13 121 min   -   Action | Adventure | Biography | Drama | History | Thriller

Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Whishaw

The Buzz: Ron Howard's latest film serves up the familiar conflict between man and nature or, in this case, man and enraged sperm whale, chronicling the tale of the sinking of a whaling ship that ultimately inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick. There's much about Howard's effort here to draw in viewers: the epic scope of the storytelling, the arresting and majestic visual effects, and a strong ensemble cast led by Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy. - Bret Federigan

Director: Brian Helgeland
Stars: Tom Hardy, Emily Browning, Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan

The Buzz: I love a good crime thriller movie and can’t wait to see Tom Hardy's performance in this split role. I’ve overheard some Internet chatter to “not trust the trailer” so, this intrigues me even more. — Akimi Hata

14. The Big Short (2015)

Certificate R 130 min   -   Drama
Metascore: 72/100 (7 reviews)
Four outsiders in the world of high-finance who predicted the credit and housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s decide to take on the big banks for their lack of foresight and greed.
Director: Adam McKay
Stars: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt

The Buzz: There was nothing funny about the 2008 collapse of the American mortgage market, but in the hands of Anchorman director Adam McKay, it's the foundation for a dark, smart comedy. An all-star cast including Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, and Steve Carell portray the real-life Chicken Littles who realized that the crisis was coming, and figured out how to use it to make themselves rich. First it will make you laugh, then it will make you angry. Carell's insane toupee alone is worth the price of admission. - Sara Bibel

15. The Lady in the Van (2015)

A man forms an unexpected bond with a transient woman living in her car that's parked in his driveway.
Director: Nicholas Hytner
Stars: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Dominic Cooper, Jim Broadbent

The Buzz: Maggie Smith segues from "Downton Abbey" to revisit a role she has famously played on stage and on the radio. With stage and screen director Nicholas Hytner guiding the way, we wouldn't be surprised if the story of Miss Shepherd enjoys a breakout success. We're happy to see that the wonderfully talented Alex Jennings in the role of playwright Alan Bennett.

16. Don Verdean (2015)

Certificate PG-13 90 min   -   Comedy
A self-professed biblical archaeologist who has fallen on hard times starts to bend the truth in order to continue inspiring the faithful.
Director: Jared Hess
Stars: Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Danny McBride

The Buzz: Director Jared Hess and his co-writer and wife Jerusha's new comedy doesn't seem as outlandish as Gentlemen Broncos, which is a good thing according to the fair-minded reviewers we've encountered who caught Don Verdean on the festival circuit and were pleasantly surprised by it. Our hunch that Jemaine Clement makes it all worthwhile seems to be correct, though. Also, note that Jared directed Masterminds, the heist comedy that has been sidelined by the studio Relativity Media's bankruptcy saga and had its release date yanked (more than once).

17. The Boy and the World (2013)

Certificate PG 80 min   -   Animation | Adventure | Family
A little boy goes on an adventurous quest in search of his father.
Director: Alê Abreu
Stars: Vinicius Garcia, Marco Aurélio Campos, Lu Horta

The Buzz: Ale Abreu's animated tale, thematically concerned with globalization, was the big winner at this year's Annecy Awards (which were held back in the summer). Is an Oscar nomination next?
